To begin kiteboarding, a kite, board, harness, bar and lines are all you essentially need. A great way to get all of these in one easy motion is to buy a kiteboarding package.
For every style of rider there is a kiteboarding package that has been put together to work with that style. There is a freeriding package that is for all round cruising and riding. Then the freestyle kiteboarding package, that is designed for big airs, spins and tricks. And the wakestyle package that helps the rider perform those unhooked pop tricks.
Every style of kiteboarding package will have different specifications of kite and board. If you want to focus on an aggressive, fast style with lots of air you should buy the freestyle kiteboarding package. This package will have a smaller board that can hold down more kite power. The smaller board will also be lighter and more nimble for jumping out of the water, the package will also have a smaller kite with four lines that can be taken out in higher winds and still be well managed.
This kiteboarding package is not for the beginner. It is recommended that when you begin you look at a kiteboarding package with the largest possible board for your weight. If, for example, you weighed 160-170lbs go for a board that has a tip to tip measurement of 158cm. This board will not be so quick to sink as you learn and correct your mistakes with kite placement.
Your first kiteboarding package should also have a medium sized kite. If we use the example of 160-170lbs again, this kite would be 11-14 square meters. A medium sized kite has the largest wind range and this means you can take it out in lighter winds, when the kite is underpowered and learn to perfect your skill in relative calm.
Finally, look to buy a kiteboarding package that has a seat harness for your first experience. A seat harness will offer ample back support and the leg straps will stop the harness from riding up your body, which is a common complaint with new riders.
