Kiteboarding (sometimes referred to as kitesurfing) has quickly grown into a worldwide phenomenon. First introduced in France, the sport has evolved from a local oddity into a global sensation, with kiteboarders numbering in the hundreds of thousands around the globe. With this increased popularity, kiteboarding shops have started to pop up in many locations throughout this country, as well as elsewhere in the world. These retailers should be the first stop for anyone wanting to try their hand at this burgeoning water activity.
Kites have a fairly long history of being used as a means of propulsion and there are plenty of examples of these wind catchers being utilized as far back as the 19th century. These early examples were primarily used to pull small carts and boats along and were cited as being a viable option to the horse; although they never really caught on for this sort of activity. During the latter part of the 20th century, kites started to be used in conjunction with ice skates and skis as a means of travel across vast fields of ice and snow. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts to combine kites with surfboards were made, and with relatively great success.
Advances in materials, such as the introduction of Kevlar, would make a significant impact on the sport. These materials allowed kites to be much lighter in weight, and more easily controlled, allowing kiteboarders a much higher level of maneuverability and greater speeds. Soon after, this type of high-tech gear could be commonly found through the majority of kiteboarding shops around the world. These materials are still the most commonly used today in the construction of kites and harness systems.
For the novice, local kiteboarding shops can be an outstanding resource for both equipment and information. Many of these shops employee people that are avid enthusiasts of the sport, and as such they are well equipped to help answer any questions or concerns that are common with first time kitesurfers. Questions regarding the right type of equipment to choose, locations that are best suited to beginners, and tips on proper technique can normally be answered in a relatively short period of time through these retailers. And of course, once your questions have been answered, these businesses can also help you with your equipment purchases as well.
The variety of kiteboarding equipment that is available can seem a bit overwhelming for a novice. Between choosing the right type of board, figuring out what kind of kite will work best, and picking out a harness system, many beginners can often become confused. This is why it is so important to do a bit of research before one begins spending any money. If no kiteboarding shops are available to you locally, there are a great many online sources that can be of tremendous benefit. A lot of these websites include a contact page that allows one to ask questions about any of the equipment on their site, and in most cases, responses can be had in a timely manner.
