A kiteboarding wetsuit should be chosen with care because they need to have a few features that normal wetsuits don’t necessarily have. An important aspect of wetsuits to consider is of course it thickness first and foremost. The temperature of the water will determine the thickness of the neoprene, but it is important to choose a suit with adequate super stretch neoprene. 60% and up is recommended for kitesurfing, anything less and the suit would be too stiff for the flexibility that kiteboarding requires.
Look for plenty of super stretch neoprene on the back and around the joints for a kiteboarding wetsuit. Another important thing to look for is the wind proof coating on the outside of the wetsuit. For wind and water sports such as kiteboarding a normal suit won’t do. It needs what is called ‘smoothy’, a rubbery application that protects the neoprene from wind. This is usually on the front of a wetsuit, but finds itself in more areas on a kiteboarding one.
Other aspects to look for in a kiteboarding wetsuit that are similar to any other wetsuit are the way the fabric is stitched together. Flat-lock is for the warmest suits as water can seep through the railroad like tracks. Sealed seams are glued then stitched preventing most water from entering and are good to 55 degrees F. Sealed and taped seams have the added protection of tape on the inside seam to seal all water out making these suits suitable below 55 degrees F.
