A kitesurf bar is usually called a control bar among kitesurfers because it controls the flying characteristics of the kite. Typically these bars are included with a kite, though there are ways to attach different bars to different kites as long as they have the same amount of lines and safety features. Since they are intricately tied together it is important that they match each other and still provide all the necessary safety features.
A kitesurf bar is typically color coded with one red side and one blue or black side. This shows the rider which way to hold the bar to control the kite, with red typically being on right. Having the bar upside down can make the kite uncontrollable and difficult to maneuver. The grip is soft and comfortable for long hours of riding and typically measures about a foot and a half wide though larger kites may use longer bars for added control.
The most important and useful characteristic of a modern kitesurf bar is it ability to power and de-power with the fifth line. This has added a level of safety to kitesurfing that was previously unheard of. Now the rider can almost stop on a dime and restart easily right in the water. Another safety feature found on modern control bars is the chicken loop, or trim loop. This connects the bar, and thus the kite, to the riders harness and can be disengaged during an emergency or for performing unhooked tricks and spins. The control bar is one of the most complex parts of a kitesurfing rig and is important for controlling the kite and the safety of the rider.
