Kite Surf Helmets

Kitesurf helmets have to survive in conditions where a regular helmet would crumble or rot. They are typically made with a soft foam lining which is very different from the hard celled bicycle and motorcycle helmets that are found on roads. These hard celled brain buckets are very reliable at protecting the brain during one crash, but their bulk and water retention capabilities makes them unsuited for water riding. With the quick acceleration common in kiteboarding these helmets could cause undue stress due to drag, whiplash, and water retention (which makes them heavy).

Kitesurf helmets need to expel water nearly instantly and be more aerodynamic than other watersport helmets. They are typically made of crushable foam that can withstand multiple impacts without losing its safety characteristics. A bike or motorcycle helmet which uses EPS foam has be to be replaced every time an accident occurs. Though crushable foam is less protective than EPS helmets during and impact the force is typically less than what a rider experiences on land and the helmet can be reused again.

There are still very few kitesurf helmets designed specifically for kitesurfing. Most are watersport helmets used for paddling, kayaking, or waterskiing which means that they are not designed for the quick acceleration and speeds attained while kiteboarding or the fast stops that can occur. Most only offer simple abrasion protection with little impact resistance. This is why it is important to shop and ask around about helmets that will suit the desired needs of the rider.
