Extreme sports are always pushing the limit, but many of these sports such as kitesurfing are actually surprisingly easy and fun to learn. You don’t need to be a daredevil to enjoy being propelled across the water by a huge kite a hundred feet in the air. These kites can be controlled by the smallest riders and flown in a safe manner by almost anyone, but even if you are adept at surfing and other extreme sports it is wise to take a little time to learn about the equipment and take a lesson before attempting to ride on your own.
The first thing learned about kitesurfing is how the equipment works and how to use it effectively. This is not a cheap sport, a kite can cost upwards of a thousand dollars in many cases, and many riders have multiple kites for different wind strengths. A larger kite is better suited for a less windy day, but by using a small kite riders can safely ride on the windiest days without having to worry about going too fast. Riders with three kites can safely ride within their skill level ninety percent of the time. A rider with only one kite can only ride about half of the time because of varying wind conditions.
Not only is the kite a costly investment, the board and kite harness are expensive as well. Learning how to kite surf before purchasing the equipment can save an individual a great deal of money if they decide that the sport is not really for them. It also allows the kite surfer to learn with equipment that is designed for beginners and then purchase their own equipment, or rig, when they have sufficiently advanced beyond the basics.
Starting the right way with lessons allows the rider to progress in a much more timely fashion than trying to learn on their own or by watching better riders. A little bit of instruction goes a long way in this sport so getting the techniques correct right from the beginning can prevent accidents further down the line. The basics of controlling the kite are often taught right on the beach and can be mastered before ever entering the water. Once a kitesurfer can successfully launch their kite and steer they are ready to progress onto water. The basics of attaching and securing the harness and board should already be understood.
The next step is to combine the pull of the kite with the control of the board on the water. A combination of the kite and the board allows the rider to steer themselves over the water and even onto waves. Kitesurfing allows for hours of riding, huge jumps and unreal amounts of airtime. A skilled rider can spin around, flip, and hold grabs for more or longer times than nearly every other sport due to extra lift generated by the kite making this one of the most interesting sports to watch and participate in. Just remember, practice makes perfect.
