The terminology and technology behind kitesurf lines can be confusing to begin with, but with the right explanation it is quite easy to understand. You have two main considerations: the line length and the line strength. The kitesurf lines length is dependant on the kite size and the weather conditions. You will want longer kitesurf lines for less wind and shorter lines for more wind.
The standard length for kitesurf lines is 23-25 meters. In strong winds you will want to decrease the length of the line for more control. However, you will not want to decrease the length of a line beyond 15 meters, as you will loose the power to jump with the kite.
If you are riding with the standard inflatable kite, your kitesurf lines should have the strength of at least 2.5 times your body weight. So, if you weigh 180 lbs, you should use at least 450lbs kitesurf lines.
If you are using a four-line foil kite, your main lines should be 2.5 times your body weight and your brake lines should be around your bodyweight. So using the model of 180lbs again, your main kitesurf lines will be at least 450lbs and your break lines will be at least 180lbs.
A kite with two kitesurf lines is an easy setup for a beginner. The design is easier to comprehend that the four line kites. The four lines will increase the responsiveness and performance of the kite and are less susceptible to unpredictable gusts of wind. But kites with four kitesurf lines are also slightly hard to set up and will tangle much easier, so they are definitely for the more experienced rider.
